2-Week Half-Day Sessions: Starting June 10, 2024

Schedule: 9am – noon Monday through Friday  * NEW time 2024!

Program Cost: $500/student

Who should take this course?
Sailors who have completed 2nd-5th grade (age 8-11) and HAVE BEEN INVITED BY THE MBJA.

 How are the classes structured?
Optimist racers will train under the racing rules of sailing for practice and will learn to compete in events with other sailors of their talent level in low-key learning races (Green Fleet). More advanced students will train to compete in the Red, White, and Blue fleets segmented by a sailor’s age. This course will hone each sailor’s individual talents and also prepare them (as they age) for moving up into the 420/Laser race course, all while keeping things fun in a competitive environment.

Club Racing on Fridays!
On Fridays opposite the WMYSA regattas, we will be doing club racing (Optis, lasers, 420’s) during the afternoons. If you are signed up for race class, you will automatically be in this mini-regatta. We will be strongly encouraging students to participate in our inter-club Friday racing (as well as WMYSA events) even if they are not currently registered for the session. Opti racers have the option of bringing their lunch on Fridays and staying after class to race in the afternoon.

We are very pleased to announce that Coach Cappy Capper will be part of our race coaching team in 2024! Also, back to coach will be Eden Nykamp and LJ Nykamp!

WMYSA Team Mac Racing
To help students learn fundamental skills, they will participate in West Michigan Youth Sailing Association (WMYSA) regattas held on Fridays at the various lakes throughout the summer. For qualified sailors, travel to out-of-state regattas is also available and encouraged. Tuition fees cover training at the sailing center and coaching at regattas. Fees for registration, travel and additional regattas expenses are not included.
