2023 West Michigan Youth Sailing Association Laser Clinic

The Goals of the Clinic are:

  • Educate and encourage sailors who are ready to explore singlehanded Laser sailing.
  • Further develop the skills of current Laser sailors.
  • Provide program coaches/instructors with additional teaching and coaching techniques to further encourage
    and educate Laser and singlehanded sailors.

Schedule:

8:30am – arrival, check-in, unloading of boats as necessary
9:00am – introduction, classroom discussion, rigging of boats
10:45am – launch
10:45am – on the water session one
12:30pm – lunch and video review
1:30pm – on the water session two
3:45pm – de-rig boats
4:00pm – debrief, review, Q&A
5:00pm – dismissal, load onto trailers as necessary, departure

Attending Sailors should bring:

  • Their own Laser sailboat if they have one or their club can provide one.
    • Boats will be available for those who do not own a boat. Sharing or rotating may be required.
  • Appropriate attire including:
    • Personal flotation device (PFD).
    • Sailing gloves.
    • Wet suit if water or weather is cold.
    • No bare feet, dinghy boots or sailing shoes are expected.
    • Towel, sunscreen and sunglasses.
    • Hiking pants if you have them.
  • Lunch, snacks, and a reusable water bottle in a personal bag/container.
  • Personal items should be labeled.

Other Notes:

  • Clinic staff will not be responsible for loading/unloading equipment.
  • Clinic staff and other volunteers will be on the water in safety boats.
  • Sailors should be prepared to change rigging/setups if instructors see fit.

Clinic Instructors:

Eden Nykamp

  • Is a US Sailing Certified Level 3 Small Boat and Basic Keel Boat instructor.
  • Recently qualified for and competed at the 2023 college national championships.
  • Has competed in singlehanded Laser championships throughout the USA.
  • Second place in the 2022 Sears Triplehanded US Junior National Championship.

Owen Bannasch

  • Is a US Sailing Certified Level 2 Small Boat instructor.
  • Recently qualified for and competed at the 2023 college national championships.
  • Has competed in singlehanded Laser championships throughout the USA.
  • Competed at championships throughout the US and in Europe in the Optimist Class.
